Deborah Fox, director and lutes
A cum laude graduate of Smith College, Deborah Fox began her musical career as a classical guitarist performing with the Orpharion Duo, and was twice named a Young Artist of the Year by Musical America. Now a lutenist with a span of repertoire ranging from medieval to baroque music, she has performed at the Carmel Bach Festival; with the New York Collegium under conductors Fabio Biondi and Andrew Parrot; Concert Royal; Brandywine Baroque; Boston's Handel and Haydn Society; Rochester’s Publick Musick; the Toronto Consort, Aradia, Tafelmusik, Arion Ensemble, and Les Violons du Roy all in Canada; and the Orquestra Barroca Catalana (Barcelona, Spain).
Her experience in baroque opera includes continuo playing with Pinchgut Opera in Sydney, Australia; Opera Atelier in Toronto and Cleveland; Opera de Montreal; SpoletoUSA; Long Beach Opera in Los Angeles; Music of the Baroque in Chicago; and the Opera Theatre of St. Louis. Her teachers have included Paul O'Dette and Nigel North. She received the Certificate of Advanced Studies in Early Music at London's Guildhall School of Music, specializing in the improvised accompaniment practices of the seventeenth century. She was a prizewinner in the Case Western Reserve University baroque music competition for performance and scholarship. She has made recordings for Naxos, Sonabilis, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), and Centaur. She has been a Teaching Artist for the Aesthetic Education Institute, and lives in Rochester, New York.
